Career as a Dentist

Dentistry, the medical industry devoted to maintaining oral health is a growing and ever changing industry. Opportunities abound for dentist including high compensation and respect in the community. The demand for dentist is likely to continue to grow as people become more and more aware of the correlation between oral health and the overall health of the body. 

There are several options for an individual with a degree in dentistry. Some of these include:  Academic Dentistry, General Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry, Dental Research, International Health Care, Dental Public Policy, and working for the government in Military Dentistry, and other Dental Specialties. 

A general dentist has a wide range of activities. They treat all age ranges by using the latest techniques and equipment.  They examine the oral cavity, head, and neck to identify and diagnose a large variety of oral conditions. They restore and replace teeth damaged by decay, lost from trauma or disease, with fillings, implants, crowns or bridges.  Dentists treat gum disease with corrective surgery on gums and supporting bone structure.  They extract teeth when needed, eliminate pain and discomfort by prescribing medicine, correct mal- positioned teeth, administer bleaching and other cosmetic applications. Dentists also look at a person’s medical history to evaluate overall health, and make recommendations for oral heath.  On the business side dentist often run a practice with multiple employees. 

About 80% of all dentists are general dentists; the other 20% are specialty dentist.  Most specialties require further education beyond DMD or DDS. The following is a list of some specialty dental careers: Endodontic, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, and Periodontics.
