They assess the patients’ oral tissues and oval health, look for abnormalities and disease risks, and develop a dental hygiene diagnosis based on clinical findings. They also formulate a patient-centered treatment care plan, perform the clinical procedures according to the treatment care plan, and evaluate the outcome of educational and clinical procedures. The clinical procedures performed by the dental hygienist include cleaning to remove plaque, calculus and stains from the teeth. They also perform x-rays, apply cavity-preventive agents, like fluoride and sealants, and give antimicrobial agents. Guidelines vary by state. Some states allow hygienists to administer local anesthetics and nitrous oxide, place and prepare fillings, temporary fillings, periodontal dressings, and remove sutures.
